After repeated calls from NASA to wake up Mars Exploration Rover Spirit from its low-energy hibernation mode, mission control is beginning to realize the ill-fated robot may never wake up again. After getting stuck in a sand trap in Gusev Crater and then switching into hibernation in March, rover operators were hopeful that the beached Spirit might yet be saved. Alas, this is looking more and more unlikely.

Recent observations of the lunar and martian surface are turning up multiple discoveries of 'skylights' — collapsed roofs of hollow rilles or lava tubes. These holes into ready-made underground bunkers could provide ideal shelter for future manned bases on the two worlds.

CNET news reports that 'the science class from Evergreen Middle School in Cottonwood, Calif., found the opening while working on a research project with the Mars Space Flight Facility run out of Arizona State University in Tempe. ...

Today, six participants entered an experimental facility at the Russian Institute for Bio-Medical Problems to simulate a manned flight to Mars. They will remain enclosed in this make-belief spaceship for 520 days -- the estimated duration of a flight to Mars. Hence the name for the project: Mars500.

Thursday May 6th, at 8pm the Crew 94 will present their MDRS mission (in French). The presentation will take place in the Sciences 03 auditorium, Places des Sciences n°2 in Louvain-la-Neuve. The Saintes Barbes parking lot, located in the Avenue Théodore Schwann, will be open.
